Depending on the extent of the damage, the condition of the existing asphalt and whether the subgrade and base rock is suitable for an asphalt overlay, damaged areas may be removed and repaired prior to the asphalt overlay. Permaflex Asphalt Overlay System Depending on the condition of the subgrade and the base rock under the existing asphalt, a two lift permaflex asphalt paving overlay system can be applied. The first lift consists of a high liquid asphalt content that fills the existing cracking asphalt and bonds the existing surface. This first step is necessary to limit the existing cracking through the new asphalt pavement surface. Once the first lift is applied (typically a 1" thick lift), a second lift of 1" topping asphalt is applied. The permaflex asphalt overlay system has proven to be a great system with a relatively long life. The benefit to this system is the cost is typically much less then complete replacement.
